How to Throw an Axe

To throw an axe accurately and safely, start by using a designated throwing axe and setting up a secure target about 12 to 15 feet away. You will need to stand with a balanced shoulder-width stance, grip the axe with both hands, and focus on the target.

  • Leave throwing one handed for when you get more comfortable.

Execute a controlled wind-up then step forward and release the axe smoothly allowing for a natural follow-through. Always retrieve the axe after it comes to a stop and prioritize safety by checking equipment, keeping a clear throwing area, and abstaining from substances that could impair judgment.

If you're new to axe throwing, consider seeking guidance or participating in a supervised activity.

1. Choose the Right Axe

Use a throwing axe specifically designed for the activity. Throwing axes have certain characteristics that make them suitable for this purpose.

2. Find a Suitable Location

Select a safe and dedicated axe-throwing area, such as Six Kings Axe Throwing Vancouver. Make sure there is enough space around the target to prevent accidents.

3. Set Up the Target

Place the target at a safe distance, typically around 12 to 15 feet away from the thrower. The target should be securely mounted and have a clear, flat surface.

4. Adopt the Proper Stance

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, facing the target. Keep a comfortable and balanced stance.

5. Grip the Axe

Hold the axe at the base of the handle with your dominant hand (for right-handed throwers, this is usually the right hand). Place your non-dominant hand on top of your dominant hand, creating a firm but not overly tight grip.

6. Aim

Focus on the bullseye or center of the target. Align your body and the axe with the target.

7. Wind Up

Pull the axe back over your head in a controlled manner. Keep your eye on the target and your body balanced.

8. Release

Step forward with your lead foot and release the axe when your arm is extended forward. Aim for a smooth and controlled release, avoiding any excessive force.

9. Follow Through

Allow your arm to continue its natural motion after the release. A proper follow-through can help with accuracy.

10. Retrieve the Axe Safely

After throwing, wait until the axe comes to a complete stop before retrieving it from the target. Do not approach the target until everyone has finished throwing.

Axe Throwing Safety Tips:

  • Always check the condition of the axe and target before each session. Watch out for a loose axe head.

  • Ensure there are no people in the throwing area, hopefully this is a no-brainer for you. Establish clear rules for observers. If someone gets between your axe and the target, you are going to have a bad time.

  • Never throw an axe under the influence of alcohol or any substances. You don't need drugs and alcohol to have a great time slingin' axes.

  • Wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet. Better yet, get axe throwing steel toe boots to be in-keeping with the theme.

  • Remember, safety is paramount. If you're new to axe throwing, it's advisable to seek guidance from a professional or participate in a supervised axe-throwing activity before attempting it on your own.
